Favorite Spaces for Live Music

Posted: 1/22/18

Does it pain you to miss a great concert? Is live music your jam? Tulsa has been called the next Austin for our music scene, but I like to think Okies do it our own way.

You might catch me working the box office during the day or working merch in the evenings, so you might say I am a little biased, but the "house that Bob built" is my home away from home. If I could only convince them to let me move in, I would never leave. Attending shows at Can's has been one of my favorite pastimes since I was a teenager. Built in 1924, the historic landmark is a well-loved Tulsa destination in the Tulsa Arts District with a legendary wood floor that gets the crowd dancing. Their concert calendar just keeps getting better as the year unfolds! I also started working on perfecting my recipe to take home the title at Horton Records' Rock N' Folk N' Chili Cook-Off in November!  website

The Colony

For a music junkie like me, The Colony is one of the most sacred places in Tulsa. Rumors have it that former owner and musician, "The Master of Space and Time," Leon Russell used to bring his buddies to Tulsa to jam. Supposedly, sightings of Eric Clapton and George Harrison were not uncommon at The Colony in the 70s. Now, the small stage is often home to the "New Tulsa Sound" folks and other singer-songwriters carrying on the same tradition. Almost every evening, The Colony serves up some of that hometown sound. Some of my local favorites are Jesse Aycock, Lauren Barth, Kalyn Fay and Jacob Tovar. website

Soul City is a super unique space in the Pearl District that is creatively decorated by artists Amy and Kevin Addington. Brunch, lunch, dinner, and amazing cocktails, one-of-a-kind shopping, indoor and outdoor stages, patio seating, lawn, fire pits, and a family-friendly atmosphere make it the perfect all day place to play! The best part? Their music calendar! This venue brings tons of local, national, and international talent to their stages. Some of my favorite shows include Robert Hoefling, Rachel Dean and Tim Gray, and Chris Lee Becker.  website

Looking for a place to get your groove on? Blackbird on Pearl in the Pearl District is your space! Whirligig and Brad James Band are sure to put the boogy in your booty! Be sure to pay homage to Leon Russell, Steve Pryor, and JJ Cale while you are there - Blackbird on Pearl has three paintings over the bar of these Tulsa legends.  website
